Search engine marketing specialists from DesktopMoney LTD have traced important information about usage of one symbol that can improve search engine promotion for web sites.

This information was officially shared by Matt Cutts from Google during this speech at WordCamp 2007.

Now it is officially confirmed how Google was treating and treats underscore symbol "_" in keyword separating in web site URLs.

The search engine optimization strategy of having keywords in the URLs of your site is not new.

However, there has been much fog about how exactly Google reads the keywords in the URL and how to separate one keyword from another to reach better search engine promotion effect and get better rankings. Without true knowledge about Google search engine ranking algorithm those who used underscoring in the URLs to separate keywords have been making a big mistake.

Now it is confirmed that if you had something like this in your URL:

your-domain-name.com/keyword1_keyword2

Then you had been picking the people who have been searching for keyword1_keyword2.

In other words, having your-domain.com/free_mortgage_calculator or your-domain.com/free_mp3_downloads was sending you people who typed into the search field free_mortgage_calculator or free_mp3_downloads. Of course, no one types keywords into search in this weird way; most of the people would type in "free mortgage calculator" or "free mp3 downloads" - at least most of the people would search like this.

However latest news from Matt Cutts prove that Google's policy toward underscoring changed.
